Regardless of your religious upbringing, there’s something remarkable about churches throughout Europe — their history, their intricacy, their presence as works of art.
But what struck me most in Matera wasn’t just the architecture.
It was the community within it.
After painting this, a local family invited me (& Gigi) to sit with them for wine and lunch, and in that simple moment I was reminded that community exists all around us — if we’re open to it.
This piece is inspired by Matera Sassi and also honors my grandmother Yvonne, for whom I’m named. The church was a central part of her life, and being abroad has helped me see those spaces through a different lens — less about doctrine, more about gathering.
A timely piece for seasons of gathering — however and wherever you choose.
